Tested and Failed, but Did I Pass in the End?

December 7, 2011

Yup! I failed

I was tested for the first time in quite awhile.

While doing my grocery shopping, an announcement came over the loud speaker. The announcer was saying there were free gifts being handed out at a certain spot. I went to check it out, of course.

We listend to a demonstration on these great knives. They were so cool.

And then she asked if we wanted to buy one. There was a package of a certain number of knives for just $29.99.

But wait, there’s more!

She added some more items in the bundle including steak knives. I convinced myself that this was a good idea. I do actually need knives. Mine are from a garage sale and aren’t weighted properly. They are dull and they are just the wrong size for my hand.

I had just gotten paid, twice actually. I felt like I could handle the extra $30.00. So I bought them. When I got home, I opened them up and they were minus one of the knives that was promised. I was feeling buyer’s remorse already so I decided to return it. I’ll be taking it back tomorrow.

So I was tested the buying something on the spot.

Whether I needed it or not, I failed this test. Once I thought about it long enough, I realized that it wasn’t the right decision.

This will happen from time to time.

I know that I will be temped from time to time and hopefully I will start failing less. I think a good idea for me is to try and think of each purchase before I make them and verify that I am, in fact, thinking clearly. I also want to think of the amount in the term of grocery bills.

In this case, the $30.00 I spent on those knives could have been a full tank of gas. Or it could have been a trip to get food that I would need for a week. It is also, just $5 less than my monthly Internet bill.

So from here on out, I’m going to do everything in my power to pass the first time!

I also blog at A Five Star Life. I write about anything that comes to mind but try to focus on finding the good in daily life.

If you return the knives, and learn a lesson, I say you PASSED. Next time you’re tempted, hopefully you’ll remember this lesson, and keep on walkin…..

    Keep fightin’ Jessica!

One thing that might help is to keep a list of the cost of your normal expenses (as you listed, above – gas, food, internet bill) in your pocket when you go out, so you can take that out and evaluate if what you’re spending is really necessary compared to what you normally have to spend it on.

I LOVE this idea!!! Now, to just have the mindset to actually look at it. Me+ADHD=forgetful and impulsive!

A few months ago I started couponing and I’ve been saving bunches of money! I have gotten so damned good at not impulse buying now and it feels good to know that I can walk away. You’ll get there!

I love using coupons and saving money. I need to get back into it. Impulse buying is getting easier.
