With the recent discussions about prepaid debit cards, I’ve been doing some thinking about credit scores. I’ve been wondering how important one is in my life.
I’ve still been debating bankruptcy and if I discharge my debt there’s a possibility that I could build my credit score back up quicker.
I haven’t pulled a credit report in quite some time so I do not have a clue what my number is, I’m guessing it isn’t very good (how low can it go?).
I know that some employers are looking at credit scores to determine the hiring potential for a person. I experienced this myself last year. I went to apply at my previous employer and when the pulled a soft check they determined that I was not employable with their company.
I understand this because they do work with bank accounts, bill pay accounts and account numbers. Their rationale is that someone who is in debt could become desperate and steal account numbers. I understand that but I’m never going to do something like that.
When will I need a credit score?
I don’t plan on purchasing a house, I won’t be taking out any loans (Minus school loans but apparently credit doesn’t matter with school loans, that’s an entirely different topic.) and I won’t be purchasing a car with a loan. I’m freelance writing right now and I hope to turn that into something even bigger, therefore a credit score will never matter. So do I need to worry about one?
I think it’s best that I at look for a free credit score report online just to keep an eye out for identity theft issues.
So do I need to worry about one? What do you think?
I also blog at A Five Star Life. I write about anything that comes to mind but try to focus on finding the good in daily life.
Honestly, I ignore my HORRIBLE credit score. Apparently someone purchased a house (not me) and didn’t pay for it??? WTF?? I can’t really tell you if it’s important, but it matters if you plan to move because a lot of utilities check your credit score.

I just moved (actually moved 2x’s in two months), I’ll be here for a few years unless something really changes but none of those looked at a credit score. The apartment did and I needed a co-signer so there is that.

I think it’s more of a personal thing, but honestly I don’t think it’s as important as it used to be. If you aren’t planning to take out loans, a mortgage or continue to be a “slave to the lender”, I wouldn’t worry about your score. Like you said, just keep tabs on it for identity theft or errors.

Bella did make me think about an apartment which of course won’t be an issue for awhile since I just moved but that is something to remember. I’m not really worried about it otherwise.

Credit score is only a 3 digit number to borrow money. Like Carrie said, if you’re not looking to borrow money, don’t worry about it for now.
You should really focus on getting everything back on track.

That is very much my focus Kevin. I’m not really worried about my credit score. It’s only affected me with that one job application and also this apartment.

When you are experience problems making your credit card payments, you cannot stick your head in the sand like an ostrich and pretend your problems will go away. If you do this, they will only multiply and get much worse…

That is so true. It’s part of what got me to the point where I am now. I’m certainly not sticking my head in the sand anymore.

I have been using Credit Sesame which sends me updates whenever my score changes and gives me ideas for improving the score, etc. I have really liked the way it sends me information that I would not otherwise know (e.g. when someone runs a credit check on me or when a payment is reported as late, etc.). It hasn’t been uplifting to see the disappointing numbers, but it makes me more aware, which I think is good.
