Dear Kirk Cameron, We Need to Talk.

March 6, 2012

Dear Kirk Cameron,

We have been together for a very long time.

I think it was around 1986 when I first fell in love with you. Your beautiful eyes and adorable smile pulled me in from the very first time I saw you. I spent hours dreaming of our future together.

I spent hundreds of dollars buying Bop Magazine featuring your smiling face. Hours were spent watching you on television. Did I mention that I spent hours dreaming of our future together? We were going to be so happy together.

I wasn’t too worried about us when in my twenties you married your wife for I was certain we would be happy together some day.

I wasn’t worried when I married a man myself in 2002. I always knew it was my first marriage. A practice, if you will.

I’m no longer worried about our future. That is because we are through!

You see Kirk, I am huge support of the LGBTQ community. I’m also a member!

I was so hurt to hear your beliefs on the rights of gays as well as your belief that it is unnatural. I have spent the better part of my 37 years living a life that you would consider “natural,” Kirk.

I dated men (quite a few, I’m sure you won’t approve of that either) and eventually married a man. We had two children together. I spent 7 years with a man who was emotionally abusive to me and a horrible parent to my children. I married him because he was the first man who was interested after I ran away from something I was told not to want.

I tried to be what you would define as “natural.” I tried very hard but:

I was born exactly the way I am. I tried to deny it and I could not do it. I tried to be hetersexual and I lived a miserable life.

Well Kirk, since you can not support gay rights or even admit that homosexuality is natural (Did you know that homosexuality is found in over 450 species but homophobia is found in only 1?), I think it is time that we end this relationship. We can no longer proceed in our relationship.

It was good while it lasted Kirk. I wish you well.

Jessica

I also blog at A Five Star Life. I write about anything that comes to mind but try to focus on finding the good in daily life.

I just read about his feelings on this issue yesterday. It’s sad when old heroes turn out to be so flippin’ ignorant.

I think he is so entrenched with his religious beliefs that he’s unable to open his mind. I feel sorry for him. He’s missing out on a world full of wonderful people.

Why should he be labelled ignorant for saying what he believes in? Not like he’s on a crusade to stake ever lgbtq person out there. Isn’t he entitled to his opinion as much as anyone, isnt that why we have the right to vote. Not attacking you jessica, but the comment here i find rather frustrating. Kudos for standing up for what you believe in but to call the other party ignorant is well, ugh.

If someone believes in something that is not true, they are ignorant. Case closed.

People can have their own opinions, but that does not mean their opinions must be given equal weight with better ones.

Yes, there are good opinions and bad opinions.

Yes, it is okay to judge people based on what they choose to believe.

No, not everyone is special like Mr. Rogers said.

No, there aren’t two sides to every story.

Sometimes there is only one side: the right side.

I think a lot of people use the word “ignorant” to mean a lot of different things. Ignorant can mean uneducated, close-minded and I’ve even heard it used to mean crazy or stupid.

I do tend to think of someone who doesn’t admit that homosexuality isn’t a choice as uneducated. But I guess maybe they could be educated in all sides of the topic but choose to only believe the side that appeals to them.

Kirk and I had a falling out when he got religious crazy. Dude thinks the earth is 4000 years old. I don’t like his glib style.

I think believing in things that aren’t true qualify one as ignorant. If not, what does?

Thank you John! I was not seeing the logic of ‘because I believe it doesn’t mean I am ignorant’. I think not believing in carbon dating and that gay people are detrimental to society is a prime example of ignorance. Being entitled to an opinion isn’t the same thing as not being an idiot.

Exactly. People are entitled to their own opinions, not their own facts.

I am also not required to respect everyone’s opinions or beliefs. I don’t know who started that garbage, but I ain’t playing.

If I run a business and a guy comes in and tells me it is part of his religion that he won’t speak to women, work with them or deal with female customers, then I must discriminate against him and not hire him.

I am 100% against discrimination for things that cannot be changed: gender, sexual orientation, race, etc.

But, we do control our own beliefs, therefore I am allowed to judge people based on that.

His religious beliefs are out there, in my opinion. I find that type of extreme religious beliefs to be very sad for some reason. I did know about his views years ago and I had a hard time reconciling that kid on tv as being that ultra religious, still do at times.

Like you, I also crushed on Kirk Cameron when I was younger – I even like his “Courageous” and “Fire Proof” movies as an adult. But I was APPALLED to read his thoughts on same sex marriage and homosexuality. I live in North Carolina, and we’ll be voting on a same sex marriage amendment in May – and I am HORRIFIED that my government thinks we even NEED to vote on this. You are so right, you were born this way, and that is BEAUTIFUL. (Now singing Lady Gaga, thanks so much :)
